For students at Stockholm's universities

Student housing in Stockholm without the queue

Stockholm has more universities than any Nordic city — and Sweden's longest housing queue. If you're starting studies this autumn, waiting 9 years isn't an option. Bostadsögat monitors student-housing platforms and private landlords that accept students without queue points.

Why Stockholm student housing is broken

  • Bostadsförmedlingen queue: 9–15 years. Longer than your degree.
  • SSSB has its own waiting list with 2–5-year waits for central housing.
  • Most international students arrive 1–2 months before term starts — no time to build queue.
  • Private landlords often require income 3× rent — hard with just CSN student loans.
  • Corridor rooms and shared apartments are the exception, not the norm.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to be admitted before searching?+

Not for all landlords. SSSB requires an acceptance letter, but private landlords primarily care about payment ability. A CSN decision is often enough as proof of income.

Is SSSB or private cheaper?+

SSSB is generally cheapest (5 500–9 000 SEK for a studio) but has 2–5 year queues. Private landlords run 8 500–13 000 SEK but you can move in this month.

Does it work if I'm from outside Sweden?+

Yes. We monitor platforms like Qasa and Samtrygg that accept samordningsnummer and foreign IDs. See /en for-expats-first orientation.

How much of my CSN goes to rent?+

With a studio at 8 000 SEK and total CSN around 12 300 SEK, roughly 65 % of CSN goes to rent. Tight but workable. Cheaper options (6 500–7 500 SEK) give more margin.

Can I share an apartment with a friend?+

Yes. A shared 2-bedroom often costs less per person than a solo studio. Both of you need to be on the contract — or the official tenant needs landlord permission to share.
